Audi Duo Series – They’ve got wood

Audi Duo Road

In 2009 I reported on the Renovatia wooden bike created by German timber technology student Jens Eichler in 2006. It was a beautiful one-off design exercise, albeit heavy and impractical.

In 2011, Audi has teamed up with Portland wooden bike frame specialist Renovo resulting in the the “Duo” series. If you haven’t guessed already, the defining feature of the line are the gorgeous monocoque hardwood frames. Clearly a marketing ploy, Audi tell us that the Duo bikes are “an embodiment of its core principles or progressive innovation that also blends craftsmanship and styling with performance and technology,”.  The frames employ “woods selected to match the look of Audi vehicle interiors.” Hardwood is sustainable, strong, lightweight (lighter than aluminium by volume) and offers a smooth, superior ride over almost all other traditional materials.

Audi Duo City

The new line is made up of 3 variants:  City, Sport, and Road.

  • City – Gates CenterTrack Belt Drive/ 8 Speed Internal Shimano Nexus Hub/ Fenders + Rack / Upright seating position /  LED lights Approx. US$6,530
  • Sport – Gates CenterTrack Belt Drive/ Drop handle bars / 11-speed Internal Shimano Alfine gear hub / Rack / LED lights US$7,350
  • Road – Chain Drive / SRAM Red Compact 20 Speed / Drop handle bars / Minimal accessories /  Approx. US$7,460

For these prices, I can’t imagine you’ll see too many chained up outside your local shops. Still, money no object, I’d have one. Those frames are irresistible.
