Renovatia – Wooden Tandem Bicycle

Timber technology student Jens Eichler wanted to build a bicycle. In 2006, he took some plywood, some glue, a stack of beech plywood and commenced creating “Renovatia”, a tandem bike. Of course  it can’t be entirely crafted from wood – the bike includes 120mm disc brakes and the usual steel, plastic and rubber componentry.  My favourite features  are the wooden lamp housings. Typical German attention to detail and beautifully finished. All that lovely beech comes with a penalty, as you’d expect. This solidly built steed weighs in at a gut-busting 52 kilos , so it’s not going to be fun on the uphill, unless you are Lance Armstrong and like a challenge. I’d say that 8 speed hub might need to be uprated to a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14. I’m positive the next attempt from Jens will be an excercise in weight loss.
